The Joy Maker Challenge Helps Youth Take Action and Spread Much-Needed Joy This Holiday Season
generationOn and Hasbro Partner for Month-Long Youth Volunteer Challenge to Generate Up to $1 Million Worth of Toy and Game Donations to Toys for Tots
generationOn, the youth division of Points of Light, and Hasbro, Inc. have partnered for The Joy Maker Challenge. Now in its sixth year, the annual campaign connects youth ages 5-18 to meaningful, hands-on service projects and encourages them to take action and spread some much needed joy to those in need during the holiday season through volunteerism. For every kid and teen who volunteers as part of the campaign, Hasbro will donate a toy or game to Toys for Tots, up to $1 million worth.
The scholarship program highlights autism awareness by honoring filmmakers who are either on the autism spectrum or whose films are centered on the subject of autism.
Supporting people with autism is an important cause for festival founder Bill Sorvino and his wife Michele, whose two children have both struggled with autism.
Each year The Arc of New Jersey hold an awards program which honors the best in individual, organizational, and corporate support for people with developmental disabilities and their families.
Nominees in numerous categories are selected by the local county chapters of The Arc and sent on to The Arc of New Jersey. The Arc of New Jersey then selects statewide winners and holds a celebration in the Fall to honor all our winners.
The Arc of New Jersey wrote to Alexandra, "Our Awards Committee was so impressed with your communication efforts around people with autism that they have started a new award call the Youth in Action Award" which was presented to Alex in a ceremony on December 10, 2013.
The Community Building Awards are intended to show encouragement, support, and recognition to those who have exhibited an exceptional commitment to promoting community inclusion for people with developmental disabilities in New Jersey. Eight award categories were created to honor the hard work and dedication of these community leaders.
This year, Alexandra Jackman, a 16-year-old resident of Westfield, NJ, was awarded the Council’s Multi-Media Award for her short film, “A Teen’s Guide to Autism”. The Multi-Media Award honors filmmakers and mainstream media outlets who present accurate and inclusive representations of people with developmental disabilities.
PROGRAM GOALS To honor the memory of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat in Hungary during World War II, whose heroic efforts saved the lives of 100,000 Jews who would have perished in concentration camps. To recognize students who are motivated by compassion and act with courage in their service to others and by their work in promoting understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and peace. To provide our youth with contemporary role models who exemplify the courage and compassion of Raoul Wallenberg.
